Preservation Of Newborn Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Immune Cells For Later Use
Newborn Cord Blood
For the newborns in the family, collection and storage of the newborn’s own hematopoietic stem/progenitor immune cells derived from cord blood for their own future use to provide the same basic functions.
It comes as a surprise to many patients in need of a hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell transplant that approximately 70% of patients do not have a matching donor in their family. The good news is that a baby’s stored umbilical cord blood stem cells can be used not only for the child but also for a close family member if ever needed. Umbilical cord blood stem cells can be used for transplantation into their siblings and parents without the need to be perfectly matched: a 4 out of 6 (67%) match with umbilical cord blood is equivalent to a 100% match with an adult donor.
The Maharaj Institute/Stem Cell Cryobank offers parents the chance to privately store the stem cells present in the cord blood immediately after their baby is born.
Transplants of cord blood stem cells have been found to treat effectively more than 80 different diseases. Most of the diseases treated by cord blood stem cell transplant are rare among children; however recent trials with cord blood have shown promise for stem cell therapy treating more common childhood conditions such as cerebral palsy, autism and others.
