Beyond Borders: How the Maharaj Institute Brings Personalized Cancer Care to the World

Cancer does not stop at a border, check a passport, or care about nationality. It is a universal human reality—one that touches families, communities, and lives across every continent.
At the Maharaj Institute of Immune Regenerative Medicine, that global reality is woven into the very fabric of who we are and who we serve. In the spirit of World Cancer Support Month, our team and office in Boynton Beach, Florida is uniquely designed to provide the highest quality, innovative, and patient-centered care and support.
The science of cancer care does not advance in isolation. Breakthroughs happen when global minds collaborate, share clinical insights, and push the boundaries of what is possible. The story of the Maharaj Institute reflects that international spirit.
As Founder and Chief Medical Officer of the Maharaj Institute, Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj has pioneered the field of Regenerative Immunology. Using hemopoietic stem cells (stem cells from the bone marrow) to revitalize and improve immune system function, which is able to target and eliminate cancer stem cells which contain driver mutations mutations as well as treat other non-communicable chronic diseases. Using this method we have been able to completely eradicate cancers from our patients and achieve complete and sustained remission. We would like to share the story of one patient we treated, a 43-year old woman who came to us from Kuwait with liver cancer.

Dr. Dipnarine Maharaj received his Medical Doctor and Research Doctorate in Medicine training at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and post-graduate certifications in internal medicine, hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplantations, pathology, and immunology from the Royal Colleges of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and the United Kingdom. He was later recruited to bring that clinical foundation to the United States to help develop the Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Unit at the University of Miami in 1990. Subsequently, he established and was the Medical Director of the South Florida Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Institute, an outpatient clinic designed to reduce hospital-acquired risks and infections. This allowed him to shift away from bone marrow transplantation towards less toxic immunologically-focused treatments to improve the quality of care and healthspan of patients.
Dr. Maharaj is a renowned clinician who has built a career handling highly complex clinical cases and pioneering stem cell research and clinical work in cellular therapy and immune system regeneration. His continued research and innovation in immunology has led to evidence of true advancements in the treatment of life-threatening diseases that have historically been difficult to manage. His career has been dedicated to studying the immune system—its regenerative stem cells, the impact of immune aging, and the role it plays in cancer, chronic inflammatory conditions, autoimmune diseases, infections, and frailty. As part of his extensive work in cancer care and research, his career-long dedication to learning, he has built a new type of practice in healthcare.
That journey laid the groundwork for the Maharaj Institute in Boynton Beach—a center built on cutting-edge research drawn from worldwide clinical advances and delivering life-changing, life-extending treatments. Every year, patients from around the world travel to our clinic in Boynton Beach, Florida seeking innovative options when conventional therapies fall short.

This is why our Kuwaiti patient chose to come to the Maharaj Institute in order to treat her liver cancer.
She had been diagnosed with an advanced case of liver cancer and was dissatisfied with her treatment options. While early cases often qualify for surgery or liver transplant, typical treatments of intermediate and advanced cases of liver cancer rely on locoregional or systemic therapies—many of which carry substantial toxic effects.
Oral therapies for advanced liver cancer include drugs which block blood vessel growth feeding the tumor and stop cancer cells from proliferating. These drugs are effective but can have very negative side effects including painful redness, blisters and swelling of the feet. Other side effects include gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, and cardiovascular issues like high blood pressure and more generally chronic fatigue. It is estimated that due to severe toxicities, over 30%–50% of patients require dose reductions or must stop treatment altogether from oral treatments.
Another common treatment is Transarterial Chemoembolization which involves high doses of chemotherapy injected into the liver through the hepatic artery done in order to starve the tumor inside the liver. Side effects of this treatment can include nausea, vomiting, and high fever as well as severe damage to the liver. The liver is already responsible for filtering toxins, so aggressive medications place heavy stress on an organ that is often already compromised by underlying cirrhosis or hepatitis.
At the Maharaj Institute, Dr. Maharaj’s clinical work—Personalized Precision immunotherapy (N=1)—means designing a treatment specifically for one person based on their unique immune system, genes, and health needs, rather than using the same treatment for everyone. This treatment is focused on identifying the root causes of cancer, largely exposure to toxins that cause a breakdown of the immune system and an emergence of cancer stem cells. We concentrate specifically on mobilizing and supporting immune forming hematopoietic stem cells which reconstitute and correct the underlying immune dysfunction in cancer and chronic disease.
The first step in her personalized care plan was to accurately assess the extent of the disease. Initial abdominal imaging revealed a significant mass in the left lobe of her liver. To complement these traditional scans, we performed a liquid biopsy—a highly sensitive blood test designed to detect circulating tumor DNA in the bloodstream. These microscopic fragments, shed by the cancer stem cells of the tumor into the bloodstream, provide a molecular snapshot of the cancer’s genetic profile.
Our blood test found a specific genetic glitch known as the HRAS A59T mutation. What was unique about this patient was that the HRAS A59T, as an oncogenic activating mutation, has been reported in cancers such as bladder, head and neck, intestinal, and esophageal tumors, but it is not listed among common liver cancer driver mutations. HRAS mutations of all types occur in only a small fraction of liver cancers, typically reported at <1-2% of cases in large sequencing studies.
Thus, the HRAS A59T driver mutation gene acted like an out of control gas pedal, causing her liver cells to divide out of control and form primary liver cancer.
In short, the underlying problem was that her immune system defenses had become disarmed. The body normally relies on the immune system to identify and eliminate abnormal cells before they turn into tumors. This 43 year-old patient’s immune panel, which was a blood test done at the Maharaj institute to check on her immune system responses, showed that she had low B cells, which produce antibodies, and suggested that her immune system was tired and not reacting as normal. Her natural killer (NK) cells, which are the body’s SAS squad against cancer cells, had lost their effectiveness at killing cancer cells and were not running at normal capacity. Because of this, cancerous cells from the liver were able to evade detection and grew in her liver.
Recognizing that the cancer was evading the body’s natural defenses, we developed a strategy to re-educate and reactivate her immune system. We utilized low-dose cytokine therapy— basically a natural chemical messenger the body produces to wake up immune cells. This treatment functioned as a targeted stimulus to revitalize and multiply her natural killer cells, effectively restoring her body’s internal defence and surveillance. To ensure her safety and minimize stress on her liver, these messengers were administered in precise, low doses. Rather than following a generic protocol, her progress was monitored through regular blood tests to evaluate NK cell function, allowing for a personalized schedule of treatment cycles until her immune markers returned to a healthy, robust range.
As the treatment took effect, her immune system regained its natural capacity to identify and eliminate bad cancerous cells. Follow-up liquid biopsies revealed no remaining trace of the liver cancer mutation. Her reactivated immune system had successfully cleared the abnormal cells. Utilizing low-dose, targeted protocols rather than standard high-toxicity chemotherapy, she achieved full remission without enduring hair loss, severe nausea, or further organ damage, eventually returning to a normal, healthy life.
Our 43-year old patient successfully beat her cancer and has achieved a longer and healthier lifespan with no evidence of cancer recurrence more than 7 years after she was first diagnosed. She has been living a wonderful life with her husband and young children.

This success story exemplifies our core mission at the Maharaj Institute. While cancer is a global challenge, our approach is defined by precision and personalization that transcends geographic borders and looks at the individual facing cancer. By prioritizing the restoration of the immune system, we strive to achieve long-term sustainable remission, meticulously preserving our patients day-to-day quality of life.
And that is what all this work is about to allow our patients to return to their normal lives, cancer free and healthy so they are ready to really enjoy their lives.
